Betta splendens, also known as Siamese fighting fish or betta fish, have been line bred in the hobby for many years. This line breeding has led to many different tail types, colors, and morphologies.
Male bettas are highly territorial and in general should never be kept in the same aquarium. When bettas where first introduced into the hobby they were bred and raised for fighting for onlookers to gamble on resulting in an already aggressive fish becoming even more aggressive.
These fish are thought to have been bred domestically for over 1000 years, making them one of the oldest domesticated fish in the hobby.
